Mancherial: Family members, relatives and local residents, besides leaders of women’s organisations staged a rasta roko in front of the government hospital here on Thursday, demanding stringent action against the in-laws for the suicide of Kesireddy Vidyulata. The protest led to a huge traffic jam.

Vidyulata strangled her five-year-old daughter and committed suicide by hanging herself in Mancherial on Wednesday. Vidyulata’s father, Ramreddy, alleged that her father-in-law Mohan Reddy had harassed her sexually and while the mother-in-law, husband and his sister had resorted to dowry harassment. Despite the torture, the deceased was sent back to the family following a ‘panchayat’ in the presence of elders, he added.

Reddy demanded immediate arrest of Vidyulata’s in-laws, husband, his sister, and her husband, for dowry harassment. During the demonstration, local residents and women stated that dowry harassment and attacks against women are continuing despite several laws. The father-in-law of the deceased, Mohan Reddy, misbehaved with some local women when his wife was Mancherial councilor and having illicit relationship with some, the protestors recalled.

They claimed that the deceased husband ignored when his father’s sexual harassment was brought to his notice. The protestors demanded action against Mohan Reddy for sexual harassment. Among those who participated in the rasta roko were POW leader Manga and leaders of various women’s organisations.
