It is holiday time and students are seen clearing their clutter of books and syllabus to make room for some fun. Parents see summer holidays as opportune moments to invest in some fun learning activities for children. And so, here arrive summer camps to take over the holiday season and engage children in activities that educate them.

Summer camps offer a choice for children to learn something they wish to. There are numerous camps organised that cover various activities like indoor games, outdoor sports, art, literature, music and dance. Camps that have classes for abacus, English and personality development help students enhance their skills. Parents believe that vacations are not meant for students to just laze around but instead learn co-curricular activities not involved in their school curriculum.

Making the best use of vacations is also an art, says Krishna Sai, Class X student. “I am from a boarding school. As my exams end, I look forward to going home. The two-month summer vacation helps me learn a lot. I involve myself in activities I don’t get to engage in school. I am mad about skating, which isn’t on the list of my school activities. Therefore, when I get to stay at home, I make sure I visit the camp that has taught me the best tips for skating and has enhanced my skating skills.

Last year, I had been to abacus and had attended personality development classes. My summer camp wish-list for this year isn’t ready yet but it will definitely include skating” he explains. Vamsi Sai, a student who had finished his intermediate second year exams recently, says “Though I am busy with other entrance exams, summer for me is never complete without a camp. Swimming is a compulsory activity for me during vacations. Taking a dive on scorching days is so much fun.

I believe everybody should enrol in a summer camp. Every year, I make sure to involve in at least two activities that help me learn new things and at the same time also kill boredom.” Apart from these routine activities, there are also many adventure camps coming up for all those willing to explore. Great Hyderabad Adventure Club (GHAC) is one such organisation which offers activities completely out of the box. It organises adventure and trekking events in Hyderabad and all over the country.

Varun Kumar, a B-tech student, says “The adventure camps help an individual learn to take calculated risks and tackle obstacles in real time. I have been to trekking many times with my friends. I get to learn a lot about life by exploring nature. It leaves behind a unique kind of happiness in me. I feel such activities help one better explore the world around them”.
