Hyderabad: Fox Sagar Lake to be next Tank Bund

Beautification works underway at 432-acre lake to make it a picnic spot

Hyderabad: Not many in the city have heard about Fox Sagar Lake. Nestled in Kompally, it was built in 1897 and also called Kolla Cheruvu, the lake fell on bad times as industrial effluents and sewage from colonies were let into the lake. After 123 years, the lake that also boasts a pump house is now to regain its past glory as the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has started rejuvenation and beautification work.

Speaking to the Hans India, Rama Rao, Assistance Engineer for Lakes and Irrigation department, GHMC, said, "The first priority is to stop sewage water into the lake, also free the lake from pollutants by widening the bund from the present 3 metres to 6 metres."

Sewage water would be diverted into downstream near Subash Nagar and with diversion channels that would help sewage sediment and polluted water to flow from this channel and freshwater would come up, said an official. The plans include a pathway, walking track, security room, a park, gym and yoga hall. Rama Rao said that boating would be introduced. Rs 42.22 crore has been sanctioned for the project and work began in December 2019. It would take six more months to complete the project.
