Stones pelted at turncoat legislator in Kamepalli

Khammam: It was the most unanticipated experience for Yellandu MLA Banoth Haripriya Naik, who got elected on a Congress ticket and migrated to the TRS after the recent Assembly elections.

The MLA who had gone for campaigning in Kamepalli mandal in support of TRS MPTC candidate L Sunitha in the district faced the fury of her former party supporters.

They attacked her with chappals and stones. Window panes of the vehicle in which she was travelling damaged partially.

Congress workers demanded Haripriya to quit the MLA post and get elected afresh.

They said the MLA hoodwinked all people who voted her as the Congress candidate.

She owed an explanation to the constituency people for defecting to the TRS within no time after the Assembly elections.

The TRS workers who were accompanying Haripriya formed a shield around her when the Congress workers started pelting stones and chappals at Haripriya.

The MLA who was taken aback left the village in her car without campaigning. The TRS workers retaliated by pelting stones at the Congress workers. At least five people were injured in the stone pelting.

Police brought the situation under control by dispersing the warring groups. "We immediately shifted the injured to the Yellandu hospital for treatment. The situation is under control now," Sub-Inspector Tirupati Reddy said.

The Congress workers later told reporters, "We toiled day and night in the Assembly elections held in December to get her elected braving tough fight with the TRS.

But within a couple of months of becoming the MLA, she joined the TRS betraying our faith."
