Manthani: The Automated Teller Machines (ATM), people also call as 'Any Time Money', which are meant to serve the people to make financial transactions at any time and any day, are remained as mere exhibits without functioning for the past few days in Manthani mandal of Peddapalli district.

The people of Manthani and the surrounding villages are facing lot of inconvenience as they are unable to draw money from any ATM present across the mandal.

There are two ATMs of State Bank of India; and one ATM each of Andhra Bank, HDFC, Canara Bank and Indi Cash banks in Manthani, but for the past few days, the bank officials are not depositing money in the ATMs and maximum ATMs are found with the sign boards - 'No Money' or 'Out of Service'.

Not only on holidays, even during the bank working days, the officials are not taking interest to deposit money in the ATMs, forcing the people to face problem, when they need money. People, who come on various works from surrounding villages like Malvaar, Ramagiri and Mutharam mandals to Manthani, hopes to draw money from ATMs but they have to return home with empty hands as most of the ATMs are either not working or without cash.

Not only in Manthani, the situation is same in various places in Peddapalli town with many ATMs either out of service or without cash.

After receiving complaints from the customers, bank officials are depositing money in small amounts in some of the ATMs now and then. The money that was deposited is drawn by the customers within no time and the remaining people has to return empty-handed.

One of the bank employees on condition of anonymous said that all major banks handed over the responsibility of depositing money in ATMs of their branches to private agencies as they will get a profit of Rs 43 for every Rs 500 drawn from the ATMs.

So, the private agencies, which took over the contract of depositing money in the ATMs from various banks, took one room for rent and maintaining the ATMs in that room. They are depositing money at their will and at their convenient time. The banks, which initially had given the contract to private agencies, are now backing up after receiving complaints from their customers, he added.

A customer G Ramesh said that he came to draw money from ATM to celebrate his daughter's birthday, that falls on Sunday. But, there was no money in any ATM and he cannot draw money from the bank due to continuous holidays from Friday to Monday (August 9 to August 12).
