Guzzlers gulp down liquor worth Rs 759 cr during NY parties

Ranga Reddy: Liquor sales are said to be higher this time, although New Year's celebrations were not allowed. Just like every year, people rushed to wine shops making industries richer by Rs 759 crore on New Year's eve on Thursday. Police conducted extensive drink and drive checks to prevent accidents.

According to Excise officials, over the last four days Rs 8.61 crore liquor cartons and Rs 6.62 crore beer cartons were sold across the State, in which Ranga Reddy, Hyderabad and Medchal districts topped the chart with liquor selling worth 300 crore.

Excise officials said that revenue was around Rs 200 crore higher than last year. Liquor sales were Rs 205.18 crore on December 28, Rs 150 crore on December 29, Rs 211.35 crore on December 30 and Rs 193 crore on December 31.

Cyberabad Commissioner of Police Sajjanar examined the drunk and drive checks and advised motorists not to break rules by driving under the influence of alcohol.

With the exception of Begumpet flyover in Hyderabad, Telugu Thalli, Basheerbagh, Narayanaguda and Panjagutta flyovers remained out of bounds for motorists. No tankers were allowed on the Tank Bund, Necklace Road, Durgam Cheruvu rope bridge in the night.
