Guntur: Guntur Municipal Corporation town planning department officials on Thursday demolished a Durga temple which was constructed on the road margins at Nandivelugu road as part of road widening in the city on Thursday. The GMC had already given an alternative piece of land near the MEPMA office where the temple committee had already built the temple.

The GMC officials said they had demolished the temple with the consent of the temple committee members. GMC assistant city planner T Ashok said the temple was removed with the consent of temple committee in presence of police officials.

Though it is a encroachment, the GMC had given alternative land as a compensation for the construction of the temple, he said while adding that they had been negotiating with the temple committee for demolishing the temple for the last one year.
