Kakinada Municipal Corporation proposes to set up waste treatment plant
The Kakinada Municipal Corporation plans to get financial assistance from public sector oil giant ONGC
Kakinada: The Kakinada Municipal Corporation (KMC), with the financial support from public sector giant ONGC, initiated steps for the treatment of household waste in the city.
The City, with 4.50 lakh population, generates household waste between 170-180 MT per day. Under the programme, the generated waste is segregated as dry and wet. For this purpose, the services of a private organisation Trash-Con from Bengaluru has been requisitioned.
According to KMC Additional Commissioner Ch Naga Narasimha Rao, in order to check the working of this equipment, order for 2 MT process plant which costs Rs 20 lakh was placed with financial support from ONGC. After checking the performance of this plant, the KMC will opt for bigger size of plant varies from 10 to 20 MT.
While there is demand for dry waste for paper production, treatment of wet waste is essential for preventing pollution. The treatment plant will also segregate metal, plastic and other substances from the waste. The municipal authorities will take a decision whether to use wet waste as compost or use it for generation of biogas. The gas generated through this mode can be utilised for cooking purpose.
This waste treatment project is expected to solve the two-decade municipal dumping yard problem of Kakinada civic body.
