The NTPC has taken up a 30-days long Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM), a residential programme for class fifth pass out girls in the age group of 10-12 years from the government schools.

Visakhapatnam: The NTPC's unique training programme to develop the girl students in various aspects is appreciated by several sections of the people and other Public Sector Units are also planning to start similar programmes under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.

The NTPC has taken up a 30-days long Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM), a residential programme for class fifth pass out girls in the age group of 10-12 years from the government schools.As a part of the programme, the Simhadri Super Thermal Power Plant (SSTP) of NTPC also started the GEM at its township Deepanjalinagar.

The objective of organising the programme is to give an exposure to the girls. As many as 129 girls are undergoing training in multiple subjects including quality of life, importance of education, discipline, self-defence, personal hygiene, cleanliness and health consciousness, collective development, communication skills, awareness on gender issues and hormonal changes.

The SSTPP is providing uniforms and other material to the girls and also providing hygienic food and hostel facility. Apart from NTPC officials, the programme is being implemented with the help of members of Deepika Ladies Club, Principal and staff of Bal Bharati Public School.

Group General Manager of SSTPP V Sudharshan Babu said that the objective of programme is to create a dream, aspiration, to teach them a path to achieve their dreams and higher goals in life.
