Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Urban Citizens Forum expressing serious concern over the wide spread of Covid-19 in the state, blamed the government inaction in containing the spread of pandemic.

The APUCF conducted a massive survey in 52 towns and cities across the 13 districts in the state from August 5 to 11 meeting a wide section of people to collect the data of the expenditure they incurred in dealing with the pandemic.

Addressing media here on Thursday, APUCF convener Ch Babu Rao said the survey suggested various immediate improvements to be undertaken by the state government including increase in the number of hospital beds, ventilators, oxygen supply and ICU facilities throughout the state. It underlined the importance of immediate appointment of medical personnel including doctors, nurses and paramedical force.

The survey found poor quality of food being supplied at quarantine centres and the government hospitals to the corona victims and suggested that the food quality and hygiene should be improved.Though the government issued order bringing Covid-19 treatment under the Aarogyasri, no hospital is admitting the patients under the scheme. The government should implement the order immediately in the larger interest of the covid victims, the survey demanded.

The government claims that it had spent thousands of crores of rupees for providing treatment to victims. However, the burden on the people was Rs 5,400 crore in the name of treatment all these months. The survey found the amount spent by people was more than the government expenditure. Babu Rao said the survey report would be submitted to the government with the suggestions and remarks.

He demanded compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of Covid-19 victims. The doctors and medical personnel should be given protection kits, he said and demanded a thorough probe into fire mishap in a hotel in Vijayawada and stern action against the guilty.

Babu Rao said if there was no response from the government, massive agitation would be launched in all the towns and cities demanding action.
