Police taking part in rescue operations in the flooded areas in West Godavari district on Monday; Locals helping an elderly woman to go to relief camp ; Flood inundating Jalleru bridge at Veerannapalem under Buttayigudem mandal

Eluru: Due to the impact of Cyclone Gulab, West Godavari has witnessed heavy rains leading to floods in many areas and devastation on Monday.

Many areas were marooned under rainwater making it difficult for the people to come out of their homes. Residents of many colonies were trapped in their homes as their localities are flooded. At many places, trees were uprooted and fell on roads causing blockade on roads.

Acting on the directives of SP Rahul Dev Sarma and Jangareddigudem DSP Dr Ravi Kiran, the policemen under the supervision of Chintalapudi CI Malleswararao and T Narsapuram SI M Kutumbarao visited many marooned colonies and extended help to people in shifting them to the relief camps and safer places.

They helped people to shift their valuables from the inundated houses. The policemen waded into knee-deep water and actively took part in the relief operations.

Transportation was hit because of overflowing rivulets in Polavaram, Kukkunuru, Agency and Jangareddigudem areas. The police arranged pickets at roads inundated in flood and bridges where flow was heavy. The officials ordered the police subordinates to ensure no harm caused to people because of overflowing streams at many places and avoid loss to their property.

In Tadepalligudem, trees were uprooted and branches fell on the road causing obstruction to traffic, due to rains. The local body and police acted jointly and removed the trees with the help of JCB. Tadepalligudem Inspector A Raghu said that they had deployed police force in the wake of rains to meet any emergency.

Meanwhile, Eluru Range DIG KV Mohana Rao alerted the police in four districts coming under his jurisdiction, Krishna, West Godavari, East Godavari and Rajamahendravaram Urban. He convened a teleconference with the superintendents of police of the four districts and discussed with the prevailing situation because of cyclone and rains.

He suggested the SPs to coordinate with other officials to speed up rescue and relief operations in the badly affected areas besides clearing trees that fell on the roads.
