Pioneering Industry-first Master Data Governance for Telecom

Arun Balasubramanian shared insights on how strategic Master Data Governance is revolutionizing telecom operations, driving efficiency, and unlocking new value in complex supply chain ecosystems. He discussed key innovations shaping the industry's future
In the fast-paced telecom industry, Master Data Governance (MDG) is emerging as a key pillar of operational efficiency, financial accuracy, and strategic agility. At the forefront of this evolution is Arun Balasubramanian, a seasoned SAP Supply Chain Architect, whose innovative contributions are shaping the way telecom enterprises approach data governance.
“With networks expanding and digital ecosystems becoming increasingly interconnected, structured data governance isn't just a necessity—it's a strategic enabler,” says Balasubramanian. His work has been instrumental in aligning master data frameworks with the complex realities of telecom supply chains, where precision, scalability, and adaptability are critical.
One of Balasubramanian’s standout contributions is the "Repair Monetization: Capitalization for Reverse Valuation in Supply Chain" initiative. This pioneering program introduced flexible cost and pricing models that adjust to fluctuating market dynamics, driving both operational efficiency and financial gains. “This initiative wasn’t just about monetizing repairable assets—it was about creating an ecosystem where reverse logistics could be leveraged as a value center,” he explains. Through the integration of omni-channel strategies, his work has strengthened monetization across reverse supply chains, establishing a new industry benchmark.
Equally transformative has been his leadership in implementing Integrated Business Planning (IBP) and Customer Activity Repository (CAR) systems. By combining real-time forecasting with financial reconciliation and supplier collaboration, these systems have optimized procurement cycles and reduced inventory losses. “The richness of master data—particularly around sites, materials, and valuations—allowed us to build a dynamic, responsive planning environment,” notes Balasubramanian.
His work also spans the modernization of master data tracking for network equipment and enterprise assets, seamlessly integrating SAP MDG with platforms like Collibra, S/4HANA, DRM, and PeopleSoft. These integrations have enhanced financial transparency and elevated governance standards. “We’ve implemented MDG-Data Quality Management to mine rules and host repositories that streamline governance while maintaining flexibility,” he adds.
Balasubramanian has further contributed to improving retail operations by re-engineering master data for inventory tracking across retail stores and warehouses. His work in archiving and lifecycle management has solidified compliance and ensured long-term sustainability.
Behind these technical advancements lies a deep commitment to thought leadership. His publications, including “Leveraging MDG Key Mapping to Navigate Complexities in Supply Chain & Financial Systems” and “Machine Learning-Driven Data Quality in SAP MDG,” highlight the transformative power of AI in modern governance. “The future lies in predictive analytics, self-healing data models, and scalable frameworks that support 5G and IoT applications,” he predicts.
As telecom companies adapt to an increasingly data-driven world, Arun Balasubramanian’s vision offers a clear roadmap for leveraging MDG not just as a tool, but as a strategic asset for innovation and growth.
