The custodial death of two Thoothukudi traders in Santhakulam police custody has sent shockwaves across the country. While the incident has drawn the ire of human right activists, celebrities too have come out in support of the victims and protested against the police brutality.

P. Jayaraj and his son Fenix were taken to the custody by Thoothukudi policemen for flouting the rules of lockdown. The father-son duo in Santhakulam were arrested and allegedly beaten to death by the police for keeping their mobile outlet open despite lockdown restrictions.

Among those who have expressed their anguish over the incident is also Kollywood actor Suriya Sivakumar who has dubbed the incident an organized crime. A statement released by the Kollywood star hits out at the inhuman way in which the two traders were manhandled by the police. Fenix is said to have breathed his last at the Kovilpetti General Hospital on June 22 and his father passed away a day later.

Here's Suriya's statement over the Thooothukudi custodial death on his official twitter handle.

In his statement, Suriya has blamed not only the cops but also held the magistrate and the doctors responsible for the death of the duo. Suriya wondered how the doctors declared the father-son fit even after they were assaulted and demanded to know how the magistrate ordered the detention of the traders without checking their health status.

The actor who had inspired the entire police community with his performance as a cop in Singam, has lamented that the Santhakulam custodial death has put the credibility of the police force at stake.
