The mission, if successful, will make India only the fourth country after the United States, Russia and China to perform a "soft" landing on the Moon and put a rover on the lunar surface. China successfully landed a lunar rover in January this year.
- About 16-minutes into its flight, GSLV-Mk III rocket will put Rs 603 crore Chandrayaan-2 into an Earth parking orbit.
- From there, it will be a long journey for the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft carrying lander-Vikram and rover-Pragyaan will travel further to the moon.
- The distance between earth and the moon is about 3.844 lakh km.
- On September 6, the Lander Vikram is expected to make a soft landing on the moon
- Pragyaan will roll out to carry out in-situ experiments.
ISRO SET TO MAKE HISTORY
We will launch our second moon mission (Chandrayaan-2) on July 15 at 02:15 a.m., to land by September 6 or 7 near the lunar south pole, where no one went so far
– ISRO Chairman K Sivan
The 640-tonne Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III (GSLV-Mk III), about 44-metre tall, is nicknamed 'Bahubali', just as hero in the film lifts a heavy Lingam, the rocket will carry the 3.8-tonne Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft
The mission, if successful, will make India only the fourth country after the United States, Russia and China to perform a "soft" landing on the Moon and put a rover on the lunar surface. China successfully landed a lunar rover in January this year.
"The countdown started at 6.51 a.m.," said K Sivan, Chairman of ISRO.
India's second lunar exploration mission that is set to launch will go down in history as the first space mission to be headed entirely by women in India – M Vanitha, the project director, and Ritu Karidhal, the mission director. Being a woman and being an Indian, I heartfully wish for successful launch and we really can't afford failures
– Arthi Devi, CEO, Event Productions Company.
Chandrayan-2 launch is an obvious mission for India, after discovering existence of water on Moon it's our responsibility to present the water samples to the world before any other nation does it. Excited about the launch and hoping a positive result out of it
– Dheeraj Ambati, Engg Officer, Indian Oil.
It is a very proud moment for India and ISRO for this venture. This is going to be the first space mission to conduct a soft landing on the moon's South Polar region. We have become one of the very few countries in the world to achieve such a feet. It is really a proud moment for all the Indian's and therefore is going to leave an impression of our country in the space
– Aditya S, an MBA final year student
Best of Luck to Team ISRO for making India proud once again, I'm eagerly waiting for our country's second moon mission to accomplish and prove its mettle in the space war and expecting our ambitious project Chandrayan 2 to be successful
– Veeresh Kaleru, LLB student, MG Law College
This is going to help us in mapping the moon's surface, its mineral and element content, moonquakes and signatures of water-ice on the lunar surface. After Chandrayaan 1, the expectations from Chandrayaan 2 would definitely be a bit high. This is going to be a very huge and great development for the country
– K N Rao, HR head, Aurobindo Pharma
This is definitely going to be a proud moment for the country and for we Indians. This will be the first time any mission touched down so far away from the equator. This time it is going to be completely Indian engineering work of the venture. Apart from being a proud moment there is also going to be a beneficiary that we would get more information about the molecules and of the space.
