Serilingmpally: The illegal structures have been mushrooming in large numbers in and around western zone. Locals blame it on the high demand for rental spaces or the indifferent attitude of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials.

Despite a number of instances of building collapses in the last couple of years, unauthorized multi-storied structures in areas like Madhapur, Kondapur, Chandanagar and Serilingampally on a small piece of land are a common sight.

R Srinivas Rao, Deputy City Planner, Town Planning Wing (GHMC) shared, "The illegal structures are been rectified once someone complains to us or if we spot any structure while regular inspection. After the illegal structure has been spotted, the builder is sent three notices before demolishing." During January-November this year, the Town Planning wing demolished around 370 illegal structures in the four circles.

The western zone is divided into four circles Serilingampally, Yousufguda, Chandanagar, and Ramchandrapuram. According to the Town Planning wing the most numbers of illegal structures are identified in Serilingampally and Chandanagar areas.

He further added, "This is a lengthy procedure as the department has to send three notices in the span of three to four months, till then the developer can get a stay order and continue his construction or can neglect the notices until he finishes his construction."

There have been instances where the builder has taken a stay order and has completed the construction. By the time of demolition, the apartment or house is already occupied by residents whom the builder has conned.
