Why chop when you can translocate trees?
The Hyderabad Metro Rail has truly transformed the city into a metropolitan. But, as often seen in cases of such large-scale urbanisation, a lot of hurdles have to be overcome.
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metro Rail has truly transformed the city into a metropolitan. But, as often seen in cases of such large-scale urbanisation, a lot of hurdles have to be overcome. One of them is to pave a path for the Metro by cutting down or felling trees that come in the way. However, one city firm has come forward to rescue the trees without hindering any developmental activities.
Ramachandra Appari, a 40-year-old entrepreneur who has a specialization in the translocation of trees through his company, Green Morning Horticulture Services Private Limited, has transplanted around 500 trees for metro rail in the city. Overall, the company has relocated some 2,000 trees in the city alone.
Appari, an MBA degree holder in agri business, quit working in a corporate company in 2010 to start his own company. Speaking to The Hans India, Ramachandra recalled how he came across the idea.
"I saw a lot of trees being cut down for road developments or constructions of buildings," he said, "and I thought to myself that the nature and urbanization should be able to co-exist." Although the process was already in use in many countries, it wasn't easy to implement it in India. Ramachandra said, "India didn't have the necessary machines for the process, so I had to customize everything, according to the conditions here."
Ramachandra said, "First, we prune the branches to make the transportation easy. Then, we cut and wrap the roots in burlap, and finally, we treat the trees with different chemicals and transport it with the help of cranes."
This careful process, however, doesn't guarantee the survival of the trees. "Not all trees survive," says Ramachandra. "But, we have a success rate of 80%," he said. The cost of relocating trees can be anywhere from Rs 10,000 to 3 lakh.
The company is city-based, but it operates across India and upon request, the company's crew travels to almost every city in the country. As of 2019, the company has managed to relocate around 10,000 trees across the country.
