New Delhi: Former President Ramnath Kovind chaired the second meeting of the committee on 'One Nation, One Election' in the country on Wednesday. The meeting included Union Home Minister Amit Shah, former Solicitor General Harish Salve, former Jammu and Kashmir CM Ghulam Nabi Azad, and Law Commission Chairman Ritu Raj Awasthi. During this time, a complete roadmap has also been presented by the Law Commission. The committee had also called the Chairman of the Law Commission to its second meeting this time. The committee wants to know how elections can be held in the country simultaneously. As a result, the Law Commission was called upon to provide its recommendations and opinions.

According to sources, the Commission informed the committee today at the meeting that if One Nation, One Election is to be implemented in the country, what adjustments to the law and the Constitution will be required? In addition, the Commission informed the committee that, at the moment, it is not possible to implement One Nation, One Election in the 2024 elections, but it may be done in 2029. Before that, the Constitution will have to be amended.

As per the sources,Law Commission Chairman Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi said that the report on one country, one election, is not yet ready. The report is still being worked on. The committee members discussed the report. The committee has also been updated on the challenges of executing it. At present, no decision has been taken in this regard. As far as being invited again to the committee meeting is concerned, he will be present as and when invited.

The most significant thing is that the Central Government wants the high-level committee to provide its recommendations on the entire matter as soon as possible. The committee will extensively study whether or not state consent is necessary to modify the Constitution in order to have simultaneous elections across the country.

Notably, the Central Government formed an 8-member committee on Saturday (September 2) to discuss how to proceed with the 'One Nation, One Election' program. The committee's chairman is former President Ram Nath Kovind. Simultaneously, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal was invited as a special guest.The committee members include Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Choudhary, former Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Finance Commission Chairman NK Singh, former Lok Sabha General Secretary Subhash C Kashyap, former Solicitor General Harish Salve, and former CVC Sanjay Kothari.
