Bharatiya Janata Party has announced that the former governor of Jharkhand state, Draupadi Murmu will be the NDA’s contender.

New Delhi, June 21: After opposition parties declared former NDA minister Yashwant Sinha as the candidate for upcoming Presidential election, the Bharatiya Janata Party has announced that the former governor of Jharkhand state, Draupadi Murmu will be the NDA's contender.

BJP President J.P Nadda during a press conference at the party's headquarters said that the decision was taken during a Parliamentary board meeting, which was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Nadda said that as Presidential elections were announced on June 15, BJP chose senior leaders Rajnath Singh and J.P Nadda to speak with UPA and other opposition parties regarding candidate selection.

The party president claimed that he and the union defence minister spoke to various stakeholders of UPA to decide a candidate for the position of the President of the country but the talks could not materialise.

"As the opposition parties have declared their candidate today, BJP's parliamentary board members have decided to declare our candidate as well. It is best to decide on a candidate by mutual agreement but since they have already announced their candidate, so today in our meeting with NDA members, we discussed the names of 20 candidates," Nadda said.

Nadda noted that the NDA parliamentary members and NDA leaders decided that a candidate from East should be chosen and preferably a female. And till date no Adivasi Tribal candidate has not been fielded as a candidate… The parliamentary board agreed on the same. NDA declares that Draupadi Murmu will be NDA's presidential candidate," the BJP president announced.
