Hyderabad: The Union Minister of State for Railways, Kotla Surya Prakash Reddy, on Tuesday met the GoM and pleaded for making Kurnool as the new capital of the residuary state.

Reddy said that he had demanded that the new capital of Seemandhra state should be located at Kurnool. He said when Andhra Pradesh was carved from Madras Presidency, Kurnool served as the capital for the new state for three years.

He said that Rayalaseema region had windmills and the power generated from them could help meet the power shortage which the Telangana would face after bifurcation. In return, it can get water for the two water-starved districts of Kurnool and Anantapur, he said. "We (Seemandhra Ministers) wanted the State to be united. But, in the event of it being divided, I want Kurnool to be made the capital of Seemandhra, as I have every right to put forth my demand," he added.

Reddy said that if the proposal of locating the new capital in Kurnool was not acceptable, then Kurnool and Ananatapur districts should be merged with Telangana.

Reddy submitted four books consisting of resolutions by about 1,700 gram sabhas favouring creation of Rayala Telangana. According to him, of the 2,000 villages in those two districts, 1,700 wanted to be in Telangana. It may be mentioned here that Ministers T G Venkatesh and Erasu Pratap Reddy and senior Congress leader J C Diwakar Reddy have also been demanding Rayala Telangana State.
