He was well-known as a devout follower of Mahatma Gandhi, who worked for most of his life for humanitarian causes. He was also known for his contributions for the Dalit community.
Sreeramulu is honored as Amarajeevi in the Andhra region for his self-sacrifice for the Andhra cause, which literally means immortal being. He became famous for undertaking a hunger strike in support of the formation of an Indian state for the Andhrites, who were the Telugu speaking population of Madras Presidency and even lost his life for the noble cause.
He went on an indefinite strike for the separate statehood for Andhra people of Madras state with Madras as its capital. Although the centre was in acceptance for a separate state of Telugu speaking people of Madras state, it didn’t accept Madras as its capital.
