Hyderabad: With ‘RED HORSE’ (Rapid Engineer Deployable, Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineer) surveillance technology, ‘Indian coast is in safe hands’ and the coastal security will be strengthened, says Dr Avinash Chander, scientific advisor to Defence Minister and Director General (R and D), DRDO.
He was interacting with media on the sidelines of fifth Convocation of JNTU, Anantapuram here on Monday. He said that the RED HORSE squadrons provide the Air Force with a high mobile civil engineering response force to support contingency and special operations.

  • Flays Centre for providing paltry amount for R&D in weapons programme
“The new surveillance technology keeps a tab on the movements of the aircraft that fly over the high seas. Indian coast is in safe hands” he said. Stating that internal security is also a cause of concern, Avinash Chander revealed that high-tech cameras and other arsenal were now being manufactured at DRDO labs. However, he took a dig at the Centre for providing paltry financial support for DRDO weapons programme. “If the US allocates nearly 20 per cent of its defence budget for the R & D, China earmarks 12 per cent. But in our country, it is just 5.4 per cent. How can you expect high-end weapons with such a meagre allocation?” he said.
