Receives Dr Pinnamaneni & Smt Seethadevi Foundation Award

Vijayawada: "The Centre has not disclosed the objectives and reasons for the State’s division. The Supreme Court has the power to set aside the Telangana Bill if it seems to be arbitrary," said Justice P Chandrasekhar Rao, judge, International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, here on Monday.

Speaking after receiving the Dr Pinnamaneni and Smt Seethadevi Foundation Award, he said it was extraordinary that the Centre had appointed a high-level committee (Srikrishna Committee) and did not go by their advice. The Group of Ministers were unfavourable to State’s unity, he said, adding "division of State is an attack on the federal system".

"Nothing is transparent in the whole story of the Telangana issue. The Centre is shutting eyes to the reality and ignored protests from the ministers and MPs", observed Justice Rao. He stressed that the constitution should be implemented in the school curriculum. Most prime ministers do not know what is written in the constitution’, the judge quipped.

He pointed out that ban on certain books and preventing release of films would lead to loss of the freedom of expression. In democracy ‘we have to give right due to the opinion of the majority’.

He was presented the award by the managing trustee of the foundation Dr Chadalavada Nageswara Rao. Also, the ‘Gramaparidhi Puraskaram’ was awarded to three villages Iddanavalasa (Vizianagaram), Kantha and Cherukumilli (West Godavari) for taking up social work/development.
