Hyderabad: Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy directed Chief Secretary PK Mohanty, Director General of Police B Prasada Rao, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests BSS Reddy and other senior officials of Police and Forest Department to deal firmly with smugglers to prevent the forest offences, particularly in the four districts of red sanders areas.
The Chief Minister directed to provide 20 armed police personnel to work under the control of Divisional Forest Officer in all the seven red sanders divisions of four districts. He asked to strengthen the existing joint task force teams, bigger teams for the continuous monitoring and special team to investigate the recent attack on forest officials in the Seshachalam forest area near Tirupati.
He reviewed the measures to prevent forest offences at a high-level meeting on Wednesday. He further issued orders on Wednesday evening to provide weapons and arrange training to the forest officials and staff by the police, as agreed in earlier meetings.
He stated that orders were also issued for payment of ex-gratia to the deceased families of forest department on par with the Police. The Chief Minister said that the Cabinet also approved the enhanced ex-gratia and other assistance like Rs 25 lakh for Sub-Inspector cadre and Rs 30 lakh for above Sub-inspector cadre, government job to the family member and a house site. He asked to workout various stringent measures for continuous surveillance in the forests, particularly in red sanders areas, to control the smugglers, strengthen the 16 check-posts by connecting on-line, co-ordination with the Forest and Police Departments of surrounding States to punish the smugglers.
The officials informed that during the last three years 1,140 forest offence cases were booked by the police, 916 tonnes of red sanders seized, hundreds of vehicles seized, 5,202 were arrested, in which many were from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. In the recent Seshachalam forest incident, 342 people were arrested in which 32 are labour. Of them, 28 are from Tamil Nadu and four from Andhra Pradesh.
