Nagarjunasagar: Panchayat Raj Minister K Jana Reddy on Sunday handed over cash relief of Rs.25,000 each to family members of the 12 tribal girls of Enamedi Thanda, who were allegedly raped by a tutor and the warden of a tribal residential school.

After visiting the thanda, the Minister told press persons that the balance amount of Rs.75,000 that has been announced for each family would be handed over within a month. Additionally, bonds secured by the Directorate of Women and Child Welfare for Rs.1 lakh each would be given to the families. The amount could be utilised by the girls after they become majors.

Reddy assured that the victims would be given free education in government-run institutions. The government would initiate strong action against the rapists, so that such incidents don’t recur.

Women and Child Welfare Minister Sunita Lakshma Reddy, who also visited the thanda, told press persons that the visit was intended to generate confidence among the victims’ families. She assured to take stringent action against the two culprits under Nirbhaya Act. Calling for setting up of fast track courts to ensure speedy trial of rape cases and justice to the victims, she said that the 12 tribal girls would be accommodated in Hyderabad-based State Home.Collector Chi ranjeevulu said the girls would be shifted to Prajwala Society, Gadwal of other Gurukul institutions. He announced allotment of Indira houses to each family.

Neelam Sahani, Principal Secretary, Women and Child Welfare, Devarakonda MLA Balu Naik and RDO Srinivas Reddy were among those present.

Earlier, Bhongir Telugu Desam MLA Uma Madhava Reddy, called on the victims’ families in the thanda. She demanded payment of ex-gratia of Rs.10 lakh each to the girls’ families. If the demand was not conceded, she said, the party would adopt the girls. Nagarjunasagar constituency TDP in-charge Tera Chinnappa Reddy handed over cash relief of Rs.5,000 to each family. The Collector and SP Prabhakar Rao visited the thanda and consoled the affected families.
