Hyderabad: A top Maoist leader and a key ideologue of the CPI (Maoist), Gumudavelli Venkatakrishna Prasad alias 'Gudsa Usendi', who is carrying a reward of Rs 40 lakh on his head (Rs 20 lakhs announced by the Government of Chhattisgarh and equal amount by the Government of AP) surrendered along with wife Rajamma before the Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) here on Wednesday. The SIB sources that confirmed the surrender said a formal announcement would follow on Thursday.

Reports reaching from Chhattisgarh, however, claim that the couple was picked up by the SIB in a joint operation carried out with Chhattisgarh police in Abujhmad region two days ago. Considering him to be the major source of information on the party activity, it was shown as surrender. Though he was known more as the spokesperson of the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee, he was said to be the important organiser of the party with access to all central Committee members.

He was suspected to be instrumental in the Maoist offensive that killed Congress leader and Salwa Judum founder Mahendra Karma and 27 others in Bastar on May 25 last year. Prasad is known for his ingenious methods adopted in reaching out to the general public and the media. The 53-year-old leader who hailed from Kadivendi village of Warangal district served the party in different capacities, before shouldering the task of party campaign.
