Rayadurgam (Anantapur): Local YSR Congress Party MLA Kapu Ramachandra Reddy attempted suicide by consuming insecticide in front of the police station here on Tuesday. He was protesting alleged police torture of party workers and leaders.

Reddy resorted to the extreme act after a heated argument with local CI Bhaskar Reddy. He fell unconscious immediately after it. His followers rushed him to a local government hospital. On the advice of doctors, they shifted him to Bellary in Karnataka for better treatment. However, as the condition deteriorated, he was rushed to a private hospital in Bangalore in the night. His condition is stated to be serious. Worried over his condition, a YSRCP activist Rajasekhar Reddy allegedly attempted suicide by immolation by dousing himself with petrol. However, his bid was foiled by the police and the party men. The suicide attempts sparked tension in the town. The party activists staged a ‘rasta roko’ in front of the government hospital here and on the Anantapur main road. Cops led by Kalyandurg DSP Venugopal Reddy dispersed them.

Anantapur YSRCP legislator Gurunath Reddy and his followers took out a rally to protest police behaviour. The YSRCP called for ‘Rayadurgam bandh’ on Wednesday in protest against the police action. Earlier in the day, the YSRCP workers staged the protest as over 100 party activists were taken into custody by police. Sarpanches, ward members and activists of the party alleged that the police beat them up with lathis and shoes.

On receipt of news, the MLA who was in Bellary rushed to the town and questioned the police why the party men were being subjected to ’third degree’ treatment. He squatted at the police station gate, saying that he would not tolerate police highhandedness.

Reddy demanded immediate suspension of the CI and the SI and raised slogans against ‘police zulum’. With police surrounding him, tension prevailed in the area. The MLA and police got into a slanging match after which he allegedly made the suicide attempt.

With a view to maintaining law and order in the context of the municipal elections, police expedited the counselling process. Among those summoned by police were the MLA’s followers, sarpanches of Muridi and Uddehal villages Padmanabha Reddy and Maruti Prasad, besides Sankar Reddy.

They alleged that police had beaten them. But the police denied their charges. They maintained that they had also counseled Telugu Desam activists.
