Felicitates women for their contributions to society

Hyderabad: “Belt shops have become a big issue in the state. I was moved by the stories that were narrated by women while I was touring in different districts of Andhra Pradesh. If I get into office as Chief Minister, the second file that I would sign would be against belt shops. I would make sure that no belt shop works in the state,” said Telugu Desam Party (TDP), President, N Chandrababu Naidu.
“Few say that most revenue for state is generated through belt shops, but would implement the decision at the cost of state exchequer”, he said. He was speaking to the women workers of the party on the occasion of International women’s day celebration here on Saturday.
Naidu also felicitated many noted figures for their contribution towards the society. Among them were, Radhika, small screen actor, Amala Akkineni, actor and activist, Naina Jaiswal, tennis player, Ramya Sri and Vaishnavi, winners of the world IQ competition. A physically challenged poet, Rajeshwari was rewarded with two lakh rupees along with tricycle.
Taking a dig at the Union Minister for Finance, P Chidambaram, Naidu said that women are more intelligent than him. In those days, to a run a middle class house, 3,000 rupees per month was sufficient, now it takes 12,000 rupees, as the commodity prices are shooting the sky but still women are managing. It’s pretty much easy to run a company, not a house,” said the TDP president.
Speaking on girl child, Babu said that many people still discriminate girl child, and it is evident from the recent census. “If we look at the figures of 2001 census for 1,000 boys there only 977 girls, this has drastically decreased to 914 in the recently released census. The recently released census explains how people discriminate girl child in the society,” Naidu said.
On the women’s reservation bill, he said that the party reserved nine per cent quota in local body elections for women. “That’s how quota for women began and now the quota has been extended to 33 per cent. Although we passed assembly resolution in 1996 for 33 per cent quota in the legislative assembly, but it wasn’t passed in the Parliament. We will fight until the women’s bill gets parliament nod,” he said.
Speaking on the country’s inability to provide adequate security to women, the TDP chief said, “Women should revolt if they injustice is meted to them. As part of the women’s year which we declared, we make sure that every woman in the state is empowered. We would come up with a new programme, where police personnel would come to your door step to resolve the issue,” Babu added. On the Nirbhaya act, he said that though it was brought into effect, still many rape incidents occur in the society. He urged women to make use of the vote for better future.
