Justice Rohini new CJ of Delhi HC

Hyderabad: Justice G Rohini (58), the senior-most judge of Andhra Pradesh High Court, was appointed as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on Friday. She is the first woman Chief Justice of Delhi High Court. She will be in office for a period of four years. A Supreme Court collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam, cleared her name in the last week of February itself. The Union Law Ministry formally notified it on Friday.

Justice Rohini’s rise in legal corridors has been rather meteoric. Born on April 14, 1955 in Visakhapatnam, she graduated in Science in 1976 from Osmania University and obtained degree in Law from Andhra University in 1979. Rohini enrolled herself as an advocate in High Court in December 1980. She joined the office of eminent jurist Koka Raghava Rao. She went on to become the Chairperson of AP Bar Council and was appointed as a Government Counsel in High Court in 1995. She was elevated as Additional Judge in 2001 and made a Permanent Judge in 2002.

She had the unique opportunity of participating actively in legal journalism under the tutelage of Koka Raghava Rao. Initially, she was a Reporter of Andhra Pradesh Law Journals of which Koka Raghava Rao is the founder Chief Editor and in 1985 she became the Executive Editor of the journals. As a government pleader, she was in charge of the Departments of Food and Civil Supplies, Consumer Affairs, Science & Technology, Environment, Irrigation and Command Area Development, Energy, Finance & Planning, Labour, Employment & Training. Justice Rohini has been acting as the Executive Chairperson of Andhra Pradesh State Legal Services Authority since September 3, 2013.
