Hyderabad: The TPCC meeting that was convened to pass a resolution to extend their full support to AICC president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday ended in chaos as party workers raised slogans against the TPCC president Ponnala Lakshmaiah and campaign committee chairman C Damodara Rajanarasimha and demanded their resignations.
The TPCC meeting was convened at Gandhi Bhavan to pass a resolution, expressing faith in Sonia Gandhi and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi. This was the first meeting of the TPCC leaders after the party’s debacle in the elections. Prominent among those present were Ponnala, Rajanarasimha, Jana Reddy, Renuka Chowdary, Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy, G Chinna Reddy, former PCC chief D Srinivas and Gutta Sukhender Reddy.
Addressing the gathering, Damodara said that the party would hold an extended meeting of the TPCC sometime during the last week of June to make an in-depth study of the reasons for the drubbing of party in the region. Damodar and Ponnala told the party leaders that the T Congress would stand by the people. While extending cooperation for development of the new state, it will fight for the rights of the people and implementation of all welfare programmes. As the party leaders were coming out, TPCC secretary G Kishen and Venkanna raised slogans against Ponnala and Damodar and held them responsible for the party’s debacle in the elections.
They said that lack of collective leadership had led to the pathetic situation and demanded that they resign on moral grounds. This led to exchange of heated words between the followers of Damodar and other workers. However, later talking to media, Renuka and Ponguleti said that the party activists were justified in expressing their anger. They said they were upset over the outcome. They were unhappy that the Congress party in the State had not been able to benefit from the decision of the Centre to make T State a reality. This, they said was certainly a failure on part of the state leaders. However, they exuded confidence that the party would soon bounce back.
