Hyderabad: Even as the controversy pertaining to promulgation of the ordinance on transfer of seven mandals, consisting of 205 villages, in Khammam district to Andhra Pradesh was raging, TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu seems to have stirred up another major controversy by announcing that he would urge the Centre to rename Rajiv Gandhi International Airport as N T Rama Rao international airport. Adding fuel to fire, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ashok Gajapati Raju on Thursday announced that the Centre was not averse to the suggestion.
TRS leaders reacted sharply to it and said that Naidu could not take such unilateral decisions. “Naidu on one hand talks of cooperation and coordination to develop Telangana State and on the other makes controversial statements. This smacks of arrogance of Seemandhra hegemony,” Harish Rao told The Hans India. Rao said the TDP should not to try to set a bad precedence. The TRS would be forced to follow in TDP’s footsteps and rename many places or parks in Telangana, which were named after Seemandhra leaders.
It is unfortunate that Naidu was using backdoor methods to cause immense harm to Telangana state. The manner in which the ordinance on Polavaram was issued was a glaring example, said the TRS leader. He alleged that Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and Chandrababu Naidu had connived to get the ordinance promulgated so that the residuary state could get 460mw Lower Sileru power project.
The Congress party also strongly reacted to the announcement of Naidu. Rajya Sabha MP V Hanumantha Rao and former APCC president Botcha Satyanarayana said this would set a bad precedent. Botcha said Andhra Pradesh state would be getting three new airports and Naidu could name any one of them after NTR.
