1948: Indian Army annexes princely state of Hyderabad, which comprised different regions including Telangana. In 1950, Telangana becomes Hyderabad State with appointment of M A Vellodi as chief minister.
1969: 'Jai Telangana' movement for separate statehood to Telangana begins. 'Jai Andhra' movement begins in coastal Andhra in 1972 for separate Andhra State.
1997: BJP supports demand for Telangana state; in 1998 election, it promises 'one vote two states'.
2001: K Chandrasekhara Rao floats Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to revive Telangana movement.
2004: TRS fights elections in alliance with Congress, wins five Lok Sabha and 26 assembly seats. UPA includes Telangana issue in common minimum programme.
2008: TDP announces support for Telangana demand.
2009: TRS contests elections in alliance with TDP but its tally comes down to two Lok Sabha and 10 assembly seats.
September 2, 2009: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy dies in helicopter crash, triggering political uncertainty.
October 2009: K Chandrasekhara Rao begins fast-unto-death for Telangana state.
December 9, 2009 : Centre announces decision to initiate the process for formation of Telangana state.
December 23, 2009: Following protests in Rayalaseema and Andhra regions (now known as Seemandhra) and en mass resignations of MPs and state legislators, Centre puts the process on hold citing need for consensus.
February 3, 2010: Centre sets up five-member Srikrishna committee to look into Telangana issue.
December 2010: Srikrishna committee submits its report, suggests six options.
July 30, 2013: "UPA coordination panel and Congress Working Committee decides to carve out Telangana state. Protests in Seemandhra.
December 5, 2013: Centre's U-turn on Telangana, scraps proposal for a larger state.
December 16, 2013: Telangana Bill tabled in Andhra Pradesh Assembly, torn up and burnt by legislators from Seemandhra. They did not allow discussion on the bill.
January 30, 2014: Andhra Pradesh assembly rejects Telangana bill, embarrassment for the UPA government at the Centre.
February 7, 2014: Telangana Bill cleared by Cabinet, no compromise on Hyderabad.
February 13, 2014: Andhra Pradesh Assembly passes two Bills; adjourned sine die.
February 18, 2014 :Telangana bill passed in Lok Sabha amid TV blackout.
February 18, 2014: Telangana bill passed in Lok Sabha amid TV blackout.
February 19, 2014: Kiran Kumar Reddy resigns as Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, quits Congress.

March 6, 2014: Former Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy moves Supreme Court against bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.
March 7, 2014: Supreme Court declines to stay formation of Telangana.
April 25, 2014: Centre recommends dissolution of Andhra Pradesh Assembly, extension of President's Rule.
April 30, 2014: Telangana votes to elect its first government.
