Hyderabad: Eleven construction workers, including a child and four women, were killed on Sunday when a 20-foot-high compound wall adjacent to their huts collapsed in Tiruvallur district in Tamil Nadu. Among the victims nine are from Andhra Pradesh.

The tragedy occurred when the wall of the warehouse collapsed early on Sunday on the huts abutting it. The wall was being built for a private warehouse in Tiruvallur, around 50 km from Chennai, officials said.

9 Telugus killed in TN wall collapse

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa announced a solatium of Rs 2 lakh to the families of those who were killed and Rs 50,000 to the injured. The construction workers were from Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh.

This is the second incident in the last one week where Telugu workers died in accidents at constructions sites. On June 28, a 11-storey residential building which was under construction collapsed, killing 61 people, incl;uding 38 from Andhra Pradesh. Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa ordered a SIT probe into the Porur building crash that claimed 61 lives.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to send a team to Tamil Nadu and asked the Nellore district collector to send officials to supervise rescue and relief work. He also sent Labour Commissioner Ramanjaneyulu to coordinate with the officials of the Tamil Nadu government. Naidu also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of those who died in the wall collapse and Rs 50,000 to those who were injured.
