Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to reserve 15 per cent of medical seats in Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) under the NRI quota. The fees fixed for each seat is $ 20,000.

Apart from it, another 15 per cent seats would be reserved for non-local candidates with a fee of Rs 60,000 a year. The remaining 70 per cent seats would remain under general quota with a fee of Rs 60,000 a year. The decision was taken on Thursday at a high-level meeting the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had with the SVIMS authorities.

The Chief Minister also advised the college management to make SVIMS one of the best medical institutes in India. He suggested that the governing board comprise medical experts drawn from across the world.

Naidu said lectures can be held through video conferences and an exchange programme may also be introduced to ensure that experts from across the world teach the students at SVIMs-affiliated Padmavati Medical College. He suggested that the college should have a number of medical courses ranging from nursing, dental, paramedical and research to help it gain a deemed university status in future.

The Chief Minister told the SVIMS authorities to hold the governing body meeting every three months and ensure that all the SVIMS-affiliated colleges have high educational standards.

He said the government was intent on promoting Tirupati into an educational, knowledge and religious tourism hub. Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas, Principal Secretary of Health L V Subrahmanyam, SVIMS Director B Vengamma, TTD Executive Officer M G Gopal and others were

present.
