Vijayawada: The gruesome murder of three persons on the national highway at Pedavutupalli village in Krishna district on Wednesday is suspected to have been executed by hirelings from Mumbai. The car, used by the assailants to chase the three persons while the latter were travelling by a vehicle from Gannavaram towards Eluru, was traced at Royal Hampi Hotel at Hanuman Junction in Krishna district. Police reportedly recovered a gun and some deadly weapons from inside the car.

Gandham Nageswara Rao (55) and Gandham Maraiah (36) Pagidi Maraiah (35) were shot dead while they were returning to their village, Pinakamidi, in West Godavari district by a vehicle after arriving from Mumbai by a flight. The assailants chased the vehicle in which the three persons were travelling and pumped bullets into them at Pedavutupalli village.

The three murders on Wednesday were a sequel to the killing of businessman B Durga Rao in Eluru on March 9 this year. Though Durga Rao and the three persons, who were shot dead on Wednesday, were related to each other, conflict of interest had arisen between the two families during the elections to the local bodies. It allegedly led to the murder of Durga Rao.

The police suspect that Durga Rao’s brother Nagarju could be brain behind the plan sketched out for the murder of Nageswara Rao, Gandham Pagidi Maraiah and Pagidi Maraiah. Three of the assailants, the police suspect, could have been hired from Mumbai.
The firearms used to shoot dead the three persons were said to have arrived in Pinakamidi village long before the incident by courier. But the police did not confirm it. Nagarju is said to be absconding.

It is now confirmed that assailants had checked into the lodging house, named Royal Hampi Hotel, at Hanuman Junction on September 22. Four rooms in the lodging house were booked in the name of Srinivasa Rao. The police said the assailants had conducted recce on the national highway for four days in the run up the murder of three persons. The incident has caused panic among the people because it is the first time that mafia gangsters from Mumbai were involved in ghastly murder in broad daylight.
