Hyderabad: Telangana State government on Sunday stopped power generation from Nagarjunasagar hydro electric power house, which had 815 MW installed capacity, to protect the low lying areas from the submergence at Pulichintala project in Nalgonda district.

Heavy inflows from upper riparian areas due to heavy rains and discharge of water from the hydel unit to downstream increased water levels at Pulichintala project. Officials said in view of the threat of submergence of low-lying areas at Pulichintala, release of water had been stopped by halting power generation. Sagar was receiving 15,000 cusecs and the outflow is 31,535 cusecs. The water levels have been reached to 585 feet.

All the seven gates have also been opened at Pulichintala and the water discharged downstream immediately. The inflows in the project is 67,000 cusecs and outflows 71,000. Over 50 villages at the project sites were already inundated with heavy inflows at Pulichintala. Officials said power generation would not be resumed until water levels were receded at the tail end areas.
