Guntur: Banking transactions in the district came to a standstill with the public sector banks deciding to go on strike here on Tuesday demanding higher wages. With the talks between the United Forum for Bank Union and Indian Banks Association failing, the bank employees decided to go on relay strike zone-wise from December 2 to 5. Starting from December 2, the southern, northern, eastern and western zones will participate one after another in the strike till December 5. On Tuesday, the southern zone of the banks went on a strike followed by the other regions till December 5. All the banks downed their shutters in the Southern zone and transactions worth crores of rupees came to a grinding halt.

In connection with the agitation, hundreds of employees of the State Bank of India of Pattabhipuram branch raised slogans against the adamant attitude of the government. Later, a motor-cycle rally was taken out and people from all sections of the society expressed solidarity with the striking employees.

The bank employees condemned the adamant stance taken by the Central government and the Indian Banks Association. UFBU leaders Kishore Kumar, Deputy General Secretary (IABOC) P Venkateshwarlu, Assistant general secretary Krishna Kishore and others were present.
