To strengthen public transportation network in Vijayawada, 90 buses have been allotted to the city under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for 2014-15. Of the 90 buses, 13 Volvo buses will be unveiled by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on January 26 as part of the Republic Day celebrations.

The 77 ordinary buses will be used for city and non-stop services between Vijayawada and Guntur, Vijayawada and Gudivada and Vijayawada and Eluru. At present, the APSRTC is operating more than 500 buses to cater to the city population of 11 lakh (as per 2011 census). The APSRTC buses are carrying about three lakh people a day in the region producing a revenue of Rs 55-60 lakh a day.

The newly allotted buses will augment the fleet of APSRTC Vijayawada Region to expand its service network benefiting students and daily commuters. At present, the APSRTC is operating normal suburban and AC buses between Vijayawada and Guntur and Vijayawada and Tenali. The low-floor buses allotted under JNNURM earlier has a seating problem. The occupancy rate in the buses is also low due to high fare, which is almost equal to that of a Volvo bus.

According to APSRTC officials, the new buses are specially designed for a comfortable travel. The buses are said to be fitted with Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to monitor their movement and ensure that the drivers strictly abide by the time schedule. The arrival and departure timings of the buses can be effectively monitored through the radio frequency antenna fitted to the vehicles, the officials added.
