People are taking to biogas plants because of subsidy it carries, besides the LPG is in short supply. The NREDCAP offers Rs 9,000 subsidy for general category for a plant which costs Rs 20,000.

Kakinada: The biogas as substitute for LPG has picked up momentum in East Godavari, particularly in rural areas. It has become popular across the district. People are taking to biogas plants because of subsidy it carries, besides the LPG is in short supply. The NREDCAP offers Rs 9,000 subsidy for general category for a plant which costs Rs 20,000.

The subsidy component is fixed at Rs 11,000 for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The NREDCAP will also provide the necessary equipment to convey gas from plant to kitchen. Cattle dung is used for generation of biogas. A household can have enough cooking gas from plant with the dung provided by four to six milch cattle. The slurry obtained after generation of biogas can be used natural fertiliser.
