AP takes water row to Centre
The Andhra Pradesh government has asked the Centre to notify the jurisdiction of the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. In a letter to the Union Water Resources Ministry (UWR), the government explained the hurdles that the state has been facing in getting water to the Krishna ayacut from Nagarjuna Sagar Left Bank Canal (NSLBC) and Nagarjuna Sagar Right Bank Canal (NSRBC).
Asks govt to notify Krishna Board jurisdiction
Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government has asked the Centre to notify the jurisdiction of the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. In a letter to the Union Water Resources Ministry (UWR), the government explained the hurdles that the state has been facing in getting water to the Krishna ayacut from Nagarjuna Sagar Left Bank Canal (NSLBC) and Nagarjuna Sagar Right Bank Canal (NSRBC).
The letter pointed out that Andhra Pradesh was yet to get about 7 TMC of water from NSLBC to save the standing crops. Similarly, it requires about another 20 TMC of water to save the standing crops under NSRBC. Besides, the AP government had reportedly pointed out the futility of series of meetings which were held on the issue with the KRMB and asked the Union ministry to immediately notify the jurisdiction of the KRMB, so that it can act as a regulator over the sharing of Krishna waters from Srisilam and Nagarjuna Sagar dams.
The letter also pointed out about water supply to meet the drinking water requirements in the state till the onset of Southwest monsoon (SWM) till June if monsoon sets in on time or else even beyond June. Keeping this in view, the AP government has been stressing on saving water in Nagarjuna Sagar, the letter said. Meanwhile, irrigation officials have been preparing the schedule to hand over its demand for 27 TMC of water to save the standing crops to their Telangana counterparts.
