Kakinada: With hardly a month’s time left for the Teacher MLC poll, campaigning picked up momentum in both East and West Godavari districts. Of the five contestants in the fray so far, the teachers’ union UTF has been backing the candidature of R Rama Rao, a retired college principal from Eluru.

He completed his first round of campaign in East Godavari and confident of his win in the first preferential vote itself. Rama Rao claims that he has the indirect support of all the political parties- the Congress, the CPI, the CPM, the BJP, the YSRCP and PDF which has two sitting MLCs besides the support of college principals across the two districts.

“ I have the support of all political parties except TDP, he said on Tuesday, in the polls to be conducted on nonparty basis. The sitting MLC K V V Satyanarayana Raju known as Chaitanya Raju is also going in for hectic campaign. His proximity with the teaching community as sitting MLC seems to be as an added advantage besides the support of TDP. His son Ravi Varma, MLC from Graduates constituency is also campaigning for him.

Of the remaining, the Chairman of Pragati Engineering College Dr. Paruchuri Krishna Rao has also taken up extensive campaign in both the districts. It is said that the enrolment of voters from the private institutions and his proximity with heads of several private institutions will be an added advantage for him, As far as two-term MLA Golla Babu Rao is concerned, his cordial relations with teachers’ unions as he served as CEO of East Godavari ZP will be an added advantage to him.

As far as P David Kumar is concerned, he enjoys the support of former MP and one of the founders of JSP, G V Harsha Kumar who is extensively campaigning for him. With the nomination process to conclude by February 26, it is expected that some more new faces may enter the election fray.
