Twenty three sheep were killed by two leopards in the fields at Peddakotapalli village of Ramagiri mandal in Anantapur district on Monday while Pothanna and his family members of the same family were tending to 250 sheep.

The animals from a nearby forest attacked the sheep which were kept separately under the care of Pothanna’s wife Govindamma. The tragic incident happened after she left to fetch water. The family members broke down on seeing the sheep lying dead. They claimed a loss of Rs 60,000. Pothanna appealed to the government to provide relief.

The villagers alleged that leopards were attacking sheep and people because of the forest department’s ‘failure’ to provide adequate facilities in the forest to feed the wild animals. They regretted that the department had failed to take action even after five attacks by leopards during the last two months in Penukonda abd Roddem Mandals.
