CPI faults varsity, seeks Guv to order probe
Hyderabad: The much-hyped techno project of ‘Examination Automation Work’, taken up by the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada (JNTU-K) has come in for severe criticism. The project aimed to evaluate answer sheets of lakhs of students of B Tech, MCA, MBA, Pharmacy and M Tech courses hailing from eight districts seems to be mired in a major controversy. This project was handed over to Globarena Technologies Pvt Ltd (GTPL).
Though the varsity claims that examination automation is the best practice in answer scripts’ evaluation, there are many questions that need to be answered. The GTPL is a soft-skill training institute and not a software company. Its original name was “Globarena IT Knowledge Pvt. Ltd. Subsequently, its name was changed to Globarena Technologies Pvt. Ltd. As per its track record, it has no experience in conducting examinations.
What surprises one here is that the JNTU-K had released the payment to the company even without the company submitting the required certificates. The issue reached the Raj Bhavan on Monday when CPI National Council Secretary K Narayana submitted a memorandum to Chancellor of the University ESL Narasimhan to intervene into the matter. Narayana urged the Governor to constitute a sitting or retired High Court Judge to probe into the matter. He also sought replacement of the present Director of Evaluations and Registrar to ensure a fair probe.
When contacted by The Hans India, JNTU V-C, VSS Kumar said, “I took charge very recently and at present I am preoccupied with the conduct of APEAMCET-2015 slated for May 8. I am not in a position to speak on the issue right now. I will go through the details in a day or two and comment on the issue.”
It may be mentioned here that an enquiry was conducted by a committee headed by Andhra Pradesh Council of Higher Education Chairman Prof L Venugopal Reddy in 2014. The committee found some lapses, but it did not find fault in the system. It is alleged that the committee went by the documents submitted by the university officials and enquiry was limited only to certain university officials.
“We are not aware of the details. If we find any evidence of misuse by higher-ups, we will appoint a committee and act on its recommendations,” said Registrar G V Prasada Raju. “We make all transactions through bank cheques. Hence there is no possibility of any misuse. If you need any details in writing, I am prepared to provide on the particular issue said Ch Saibabu, Director of Evaluation.
