No reason to panic, assure officials. The irrigation department officials are releasing 4.96 lakh cusecs of water into the sea from Sir Arthur Cotton barrage as the flood water level has increased to 7.20 feet at the barrage.

Rajahmundry: The irrigation department officials are releasing 4.96 lakh cusecs of water into the sea from Sir Arthur Cotton barrage as the flood water level has increased to 7.20 feet at the barrage. All the 175 crest gates have been lifted and the officials are forecasting that about 1.50 lakh cusecs water may reach the barrage by Monday.

Superintending Engineer Irrigation, Sugunakar Rao explained that the first warning would be issued only after water reaching 11.75 feet at Sir Arthur Cotton barrage. He made it clear that there is no need for panic as the barrage has the capacity to discharge of water to the tune of more than 30 lakh cusecs into the sea.

Meanwhile, East Godavari district collector H Arun Kumar has directed the officials to stay in their work places as heavy rains are occurring at the beginning of monsoon. He directed RDOs to set up control rooms in their respective areas and have a buffer of essential commodities for three months in fair price shops. He further directed that special arrangements should be made in four merged mandals during flood season.

Meanwhile, heavy rains affected several places in the agency area, particularly in mandals merged in the district from Khammam like Chintur and Vara Rama Chandrapuram. People from several areas in Chinturu and VR Puram have been evacuated as the tributary of Godavari, Sabari was overflowing.

Water entered into the houses in these areas. Several villages were cut off from the main land due to heavy rains and the officials have arranged boats to send essential commodities for the people trapped in these areas. Traffic was also affected as trees had fallen on the roads and the officials have begun road clearing work.

The bridge between VR Puram and Bhadrachalam was damaged and the traffic has been diverted. Project Officer ITDA Rampa Chodavaram KVN Chakradhar Babu said that special officers and sectoral officers have been pressed into service in order to provide drinking water, chlorination and bleaching in the agency mandals and medical and health teams have been also made available.

He mentioned that the officials have been directed to build a buffer of essential commodities for three months at GCC stores. He informed that action plan is being implemented according to flood manual in the agency mandals.
