The idea is to get good milk products for their own consumption and also to keep themselves busy.

The dairy in the prison premises will be first of its kind in the State for which the Department of Correctional Services has sanctioned an amount of Rs 16 lakh for procurement of cattle and milk machines. The cattle shed is now under construction and after completing the infrastructure facilities, the authorities had plans to buy cattle.

The officials want to ensure the supply of good quality curd and milk for inmates of jail and the daily demand in prison stands at 220 litres of milk. Sharing their views, the in-charge Superintendent K Rajeswara Rao and Deputy Superintendent Dr V Sanyasi Rao (who was earlier a veterinary doctor) told ‘The Hans India’ on Thursday that the public response to the recently launched bakery products encouraged them to set up a dairy.

“The idea is to develop inmates’ skills so that they could start their own business after their release from the prison. The daily sales turnover in the outlet at the entrance and canteen inside has touched Rs 3,000 per day presently’, the officials said. Four inmates who were trained in making the bakery products, are now making 12 varieties of high quality cakes, breads and coconut biscuits, they added.

The prison has also signed an MOU with Himalaya Drug Company and the firm is procuring Kalmeg (Neelavemu) leaves and drumstick trees (Mulaga) from the premises. Vegetables are being farmed in an area of ten acres in the jail premises for consumption of the inmates.
