Visakhapatnam: The assertion of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday that mere sanctioning of special status would not suffice but the state needs much more help from the Centre is being viewed by critics as a first step towards preparing the people that the state should extract the best out of the Centre in case it does not give the special status.

Making a long speech on the occasion of 69th Independence Day at the picturesque Ramakrishna Beach, Naidu said: “Special status is not enough. The Centre should help in the completion of the Polavaram project on time besides giving enough funds for the capital construction. The Centre should also help in the process of industrialization and in creating the railway zone. It should also help in meeting the revenue deficit.”

Referring to the unscientific manner in which the state was divided, Naidu emphasized that the Central government should come to the rescue of the State. The Chief Minister said: “The Centre should initiate corrective measures because bifurcation was carried without the consent of the people of the state.

Telugu speaking people never wanted a division of the state. Hence, it is the responsibility of the Centre to develop Andhra Pradesh on par with the three neighbouring States -- Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Telangana.’’ Naidu said the Telugu Desam, which received a huge mandate from the people last year, is determined to make Andhra Pradesh the most progressive state in the country.

Development, welfare and services are the three fields, which the government has been concentrating since elected to the power, the Chief Minister added. In spite of the problems caused by the bifurcation, the state government has been solving each problem step by step. The power crisis was solved and the state has 24x7 supply, helped the farmers who were neck deep in debts, infused capital into women self help groups and launched new industrial policy to generate employment for the unemployed youth.

“Major achievement of the government is that we are dedicating the Pattiseema project to the nation on the auspicious day of Independence. The project has been completed in a record time and people would get the benefits of Polavaram four years in advance,’’ the Chief Minister said.

Earlier, he unfurled the National Flag and took the guard of honour from the police battalions and witnessed the tableaux and the cultural programmes apart from presenting Indian Police Medals to distinguished police personnel on the occasion. His Cabinet colleagues, MLAs, local MPs, DGP J V Ramudu and chief secretary IYR Krishna Rao were present on the occasion.
