With all the major tributaries of Godavari, including Pranahita, Indravathi and Taliperu, receiving copious inflows for the last couple of days, the water level in the river has witnessed a rise. However, the water level in the river was much below the first warning level of 43 feet.

Meanwhile, road links to nearly 25 villages between Wajedu and Perur were hit due to the overflowing of Cheekupalli stream for the last 3 days. Elsewhere in the Vemanapally mandal of Adilabad district, the Pranahita river is in spate.

Eluru (West Godavari): Six of a family, including four women and two children were washed away in a rivulet’s flash flood at Gubbala Mangamma temple near Kamavaram village of Buttayagudem mandal in tribal area in the disstrict on Sunday.

According to information received at headquarters here, 15 members, who are relatives from Mettala Gollagudem village near Gudiwada in Krishna District and Vijayawada have decided to go to Gubbala Mangamma temple situated in Buttayagudem forest interiors to offer prayers to the deity.

They boarded an Eicher vehicle and reached to the temple around 6.00 am in the morning. After visiting the deity, all of them were returning to their vehicle. The heavy downpour since Saturday night around the temple and upstream caused flood in the rivulet flowing adjacent to the temple.

The water level rose in the rivulet, when they were on the way to their vehicle and all of them entered a cave near the temple to escape flood. However, when the flood was increasing beyond the limit of the cave they are staying, they tried to cross the rivulet and were drowned. On the sight of people being washed away, the local tribals jumped and saved nine members and six people were washed away in the flood.

The victims were identified as Akula Kalyani (33), Mangu Saraswati (60), and E Deepak Sai (15), Vemula Madhavi (33), Talli Lokesh (13) and Vemula Umadevi (32). The body of Madhavi has yet to be found. ITDA Project Officer Suryanarayana, Jangareddigudem DSP K Venkatrao rushed to the spot as soon as they came to know about the incident.
