Hyderabad: A two-judge bench of the High Court at Hyderabad on Tuesday appointed S Niranjan Reddy as amicus to assist the court in a matter relating to consumption of polluted fruits. The bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Dilip B Bhosale and Justice SV Bhatt was dealing with a newspaper article published in a daily newspaper as a petition.

The article alleged that fruits were being artificially ripened by using strong chemicals and such fruits were being sold to the public at large. This, the article contended, was affecting the health of the public. The government of Andhra Pradesh informed the court that it found no chemicals during raids whereas the Telangana government pointed out that it found calcium carbide in the markets around Hyderabad.

The government said that the laboratory reports confirmed the same and action was initiated and shops were seized. The bench directed the governments of the twin states of Telangana and AP to file their counters within two weeks and adjourned the matter.
