Hyderabad: Responses to the efforts of Andhra Pradesh government in preparing ground to make the State’s shoreline districts as logistics hubs are trickling in. And, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) worth Rs 1,000 crore to make a beginning in this direction have been sent to the Centre to secure its nod.
According to the sources in the AP Ports Department (APPD) and Infrastructure and Investment (I&I) Department, as a first step, three conferences were held during the last six months on the issue. The conferences were attended by the officials from the Union Ministry of Transport, experts, representatives of ports and other stake-holders.
They have decided to formulate proposals to prepare ground to build up a logistics base. “Participants of the meetings were representatives from various ports, experts in transport and logistics, officials from the APPD, and the prospective investors. By second meeting, we could identify the important components needed to line up to prepare the base,” said a senior official from the APPD.
However, it was found that several measures need to be taken to overcome bottlenecks in the existing state of transport and logistics connecting ports, road, rail and airways for creating an eco-friendly system, which might take three to four years, he added.
By the end of the third meeting, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) have been prepared on important components identified for taking up under Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode, sources said. And, after the third meeting which was attended by the officials of the Union Ministry of Shipping, the DPRs worth of Rs 1,000 crore have been submitted to the Central government to secure its nod.
What is making the officials confident of securing the Centre’s approval for the proposals was that the DPRs sent were in line with and meet the objectives of the Union Government’s top priority Sagaramala Project. Confirming this, Secretary to Government for Energy and I&I Ajay Jain said that the proposed DPRs were sent to the Centre under Sagaramala Project.
Taking this initiative further, the State has decided to establish a Logistics Association, and to follow it up by setting up a Logistics University, for producing the needed human resources to step up the pace of the next phase in the chain of creating the structural and policy changes for establishing Multimodal Transportation of Goods and Service System.
