Tirupati: The stage is set for the inauguration of the new integrated terminal at Tirupati airport on Thursday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The new terminal will help boost connectivity to the temple town in southern Andhra Pradesh, according to the Airports Authority of India, which spent Rs 191 crore on building the new terminal.
The terminal can now handle code 'D' and code 'C' types of aircraft with link taxi, apron and associated infrastructure, the authority said in a statement here.
The terminal has been designed, deriving inspiration from the shape of Garuda (Eagle) in-flight with its wings flapping/spread in air, Garuda being the carrier of Lord Vishnu (Sri Balaji).
This, the authorities say, will instantly connect with passenger visiting this temple city for religious pilgrimage.
The new steel and glass integrated terminal building can handle 500 domestic and 200 international passengers at a time and has a peak-hour handling capacity of 700 passengers built over an area of 16,500 sqm plus 5,500 sqm of basement.
It also has state-of-art modern passenger friendly facilities and services such as Baggage Handling System compatible with line X-ray machine integrated with Departure Conveyor System, incline Arrival Baggage, claim carousels,
Passenger Boarding Brides with Visual Docking Guidance System, Central Air-conditioning, Public Address system, Fire Alarm System, Flight Information Display System (FIDS), CCTV for surveillance, Check-in-counters with Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE),
Ca Parking etc. Energy efficient and eco-friendly material like Fly Ash Bricks, Low heat gain glass, LED lighting and energy efficient chillers etc. are used in the building for obtaining “4 – star” rating of GRIHA. It has 18 check-in-counters, four immigration counters, four baggage conveyors for arrival and one for departure, two VIP lounges, and parking for 250 cars.
Governor ESL Narasimhan, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Civil Aviation Minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu and several other dignitaries from the Centre and State governments will be present.
