Vijayawada: Editor of The Hans India and former MLC Prof. K Nageshwar emphasised the need to develop Amaravati as global city and land of opportunities for the people across the State. Prof. Nageshwar was the chief guest at the seminar titled ‘Mahishmati Amaravati’, organised by the Rotary Vijayawada Mid Town here on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Nageshwar said that majority of the people in the State have doubts on developing Amaravati as a capital city with world-class facilities. “Earlier, development of cities had a negative impact on people in rural areas.

It is the duty of the government to dispel the doubts and create awareness among people on the opportunities, which would be a benefit to all sections of the society.” He urged the State government not to confine the development to only capital region.

“Development should not be limited to Krishna- Guntur region, all major cities in the State have to be developed,” he added.

Prof. Nageshwar appealed to the State government to develop a strong cultural, economic and social fabric in the capital region to protect the integrity of the State.

He underlined the need for civil society organisations in taking up problems. “The State government should create a Green Zone in capital city; wherein various agricultural products are cultivated.

The zone should be large enough to serve the needs of capital residents,” he suggested. Prof. Nageshwar urged the government to initiate measures to tackle urban disasters, improve public transportation, livelihood and solid waste management issues.

Expressing his concern over uncertainty on special category status to Andhra Pradesh, he said that no political party has taken a strong stance to fight for the status.

“The State government has to mount pressure on the Centre to provide 90 per cent of the funds to the State, apart from providing 50 per cent of the profit from sale of gas in K-G Basin. An estimated Rs 2 lakh crore investments will likely head towards AP, if these demands are met,” he opined.

Prof. Nageshwar said that the Central government should at least implement some of the provisions mentioned in the AP Reorganisation Act- 2014.
